Most "earn rewards on rent" advice assumes you have a good credit card and are happy to pay a processing fee. Plenty of renters don't want either. Maybe you are new to Canada, rebuilding credit, or just prefer not to put $2,000 a month on a card.
The good news: you can earn cashback on rent paid straight from your bank account. Here is how it works.
Short Answer: Yes, you can earn cashback on rent without a credit card. Neobanc pays cashback on eligible rent payments, including rent funded by free Interac e-Transfer. You choose 1% cashback applied toward your next rent payment or 2% on a six-month rolling unlock. There is no Neobanc fee on e-Transfer payments. Neobanc delivers your rent by Interac e-Transfer, so your landlord does not need to sign up or approve anything, as long as they accept e-Transfer.
When you send rent by Interac e-Transfer from your bank, the money moves for free, but nobody pays you for it. Your bank does not add rewards, and your landlord certainly doesn't.
Most rent reward apps focus on credit cards because card networks fund rewards. That leaves bank-funded payments out. For example, Chexy's main product is card-funded rent, and Chexy doesn't pay ongoing cashback on rent itself, though it periodically runs promotions, such as Aeroplan bonus points, and offers referral rewards. TenantPay lets tenants pay by pre-authorized debit for a $4.99 flat fee and earn TenantPay Points rather than direct cashback.
Neobanc treats a free e-Transfer the same way it treats a card payment when it comes to cashback. Here is the flow.
On the 2% tier, each payment's cashback arrives six months after that payment. For example, 2% cashback on a $2,000 rent payment made in April 2026 ($40) unlocks in October 2026. After your first six months, a payment's cashback unlocks every month.
That is money you would not earn at all by sending the same e-Transfer from your bank.
Neobanc also lets you pay rent by credit card, and your card's own rewards stack on top of Neobanc cashback. Card payments carry a processing fee: 1.50% on the 1% tier and 2.25% on the 2% tier. e-Transfer has no fee.
Rule of thumb: if your card earns less than the fee on rent, e-Transfer is the better choice. If your card earns more, a card can come out ahead, but only if you pay the balance in full every month. Our guide to credit card rewards vs rent fees goes deeper.
Nothing changes for your landlord. They receive rent by Interac e-Transfer, like they probably do now. They do not need an account or to approve anything. The only condition is that your landlord accepts e-Transfer. If they don't yet, our guide on how to convince your landlord to accept e-Transfer can help.
Landlords can also join Neobanc's free Landlord Partner Program to see tenant payments in a dashboard and earn a monthly referral reward, separate from your cashback.
Neobanc is a registered Money Services Business with FINTRAC and is PCI-DSS compliant. Payments are confirmed to both you and your landlord, so you have a record of each rent payment.
Rent reporting to build credit is also available as a 100% opt-in option if you want it.
You don't need a credit card, or a processing fee, to earn cashback on rent in Canada. With Neobanc, rent funded by free Interac e-Transfer earns cashback on eligible payments: 1% toward your next rent, or 2% on a six-month rolling unlock. On $2,000 monthly rent, that is $240 to $480 a year for a payment you already make. If you do have a strong rewards card, you can stack it on top, but for many renters the free e-Transfer route is the smarter default.

It depends on your card. If your card earns less on rent than the processing fee, e-Transfer earns more because it has no fee. If your card earns more than the fee and you pay the balance in full, a card can come out ahead because Neobanc cashback stacks on top of your card rewards.
Fund your rent payment at least three business days before rent is due. This gives Neobanc time to deliver the rent to your landlord by Interac e-Transfer on schedule.
